ARRL Delta Division Update March 12 2010

ARRL REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR SENATE BILL 1755

In December 2009 the U.S. Senate unanimously passed S 1755, The Amateur
Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009. S 1755 calls
on the Department of Homeland Security to undertake a study on the uses
and capabilities of Amateur Radio Service communications in emergencies
and disaster relief and then to submit a report to Congress no more
than 180 days after the bill becomes law.

The ARRL is asking its membership to contact the leadership of the
Energy and Commerce Committee, Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA-30) and
Ranking Member Joe Barton (R-TX-6), requesting support and action on
moving S 1755 through the committee and to the House floor for
adoption. S 1755 accomplishes the same things as HR 2160; HR 2160 was
introduced in April 2009 by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18). Since S
1755 has already been approved by the Senate, moving it forward in the
House will simplify the process.

Check out www.arrl.org/news/stories/2010/03/10/11385/?nc=1 for more
details including a sample letter and fax numbers for Rep. Waxman and
Rep. Barton. Please fax a copy of your letters to the ARRL’s
Washington representative, Chwat and Co., at 703-684-7594 as well.

*****************************************************************

Attention All Amateurs. In response to the earthquake which resulted in massive destruction and loss of life in Haiti, the IARU Region 2 has requested that certain frequencies be kept clear for emergency traffic. In addition to Organized nets on 7.045 and 3.720 several other frequencies may be used to coordinate health and welfare or other traffic related to the current situation in Haiti.

The list of frequencies that the ARRL recommends keeping clear are 14.265 MHz, 14.300 MHz, 7.045 MHz, 7.265 MHz, 3.977 MHz and 3.720 MHz.

As always regardless of what frequency you may be on if you hear traffic related to this or any emergency please give priority to the emergency traffic, assist if you can or try to put the individual in contact with someone who can assist.
